3D sound was an impressive feature of the recent Bjork Digital exhibition at Carriageworks in Sydney Australia, part of the Vivid 2016 festival of light, music and ideas. The exhibition was divided into five unique zones, including a virtual reality room and the visually and aurally immersive Black Lake cinema experience, which utilised the IOSONO Core audio processor. The work was directed by Los Angeles-based fashion and music filmmaker Andrew Thomas Huang and was filmed in the highlands of Iceland. “Bjork has positioned herself at the forefront of virtual reality in music through her vulnicura visual album and there was no better solution than Barco’s IOSONO Core Audio Processor to bring the Black Lake experience to life. We were honoured to work with her team to commission the system and co-mix the 3D audio track with Bjork’s sound designer, Marco Perry” said Des O’Neill, spatial audio specialist and General Manager of Sounds & Motion. “Originally mixed in London at our Immersive Audio Ltd production studios using our IOSONO Core system, we were ready and easily able to translate the piece in Sydney to the Black Lake installation system created with Des O’Neill and an excellent tech crew. With a cutting edge installation featuring two parallel wide angled screens playing the visceral footage of Black Lake, using this immersive audio system enabled Bjork’s vocal choreography to draw the audience into the experience moving their attention around the room” said Marco Perry, Immersive Audio specialist for Bjork. Sounds & Motion worked with our client Imagination to deliver an underwater experience as the centrepiece of Woodside’s LNG18 exhibition stand in April 2016. Woodside’s goal was to draw attendees to their stand by building intrigue to then showcase its environmental research, which has been conducted during their underwater explorations.
The vision was to be projected on to a 180° screen and Imagination turned to us to create a spatial soundscape to truly immerse and captivate each visitor. Woodside’s presence was a standout amongst the exhibitors at LNG18 exhibition, the client was extremely happy and audiences wowed by the innovative delivery of content. “Des, Nick and Felix – what a team! The soundscape is amazing and you guys have really delivered, well done and thank you.” Chelline Nel Producer, Imagination Sounds & Motion’s role on this project was to design an original soundscape, create the spatial audio mix, speaker design and layout, deployment of Barco’s IOSONO Core Audio processor and on site sound support. We worked with our client Imagination, and alongside Proj-X Design who designed and built the stand. Australia Day is more than just a holiday; it’s both a day of reflection and socialising for many Australians. The celebrations on Sydney Harbour are some of the most exciting in the country.
This year, we were contracted by the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet to create the soundtrack for the Australia Day ‘On the Harbour’ event. The soundtrack that included a choir, voiceovers and special effects was played back from on board the HMAS Canberra through large speaker arrays that were focused towards various vantage points around the harbour. The soundtrack was timed to allow for the inclusion of live elements such as a RAAF F18 fly past and a 21 gun salute. This month we travelled to Shanghai to collaborate with Full Dimension Multimedia and Barco to deliver an immersive sound experience for audiences attending Shanghai’s North Bund Opera week. This outdoor concert series was staged at North Bund on the banks of the Huangpu River and comprised of three concerts. The first concert was a production of La Traviata directed by Marco Carniti and conducted by Xu Zhong, the second, a Gala Symphony concert, conducted by Xu Zhong, the third a Gala Concert - Excerpts from Opera, conducted by Xu Zhong and Sergio Alapont, and featured Soprano, Daniela Schillaci, Mezzo-soprano, Elena Belfiore, Tenor, Emanuele D’Aguanno and Baritone, Piero Terranova. The speaker system consisted of 11-line array stacks and out fill arrays for the main PA and over 250 speakers configured and rigged above the audience area. The entire system was driven by Barco’s IOSONO CORE processor and delivered a truly immersive listening experience for the audience. Thanks to event producers Full Dimension Multimedia and Barco for what turned out to be a great collaboration. In an Australian first, Rizer, a dynamic event production company based in Sydney, engaged Sounds & Motion to deliver an immersive 3D soundscape for News Corp Australia’s ‘Come Together 2015’. The annual event used to announce their major commercial initiatives for the year ahead to their clients, partners, media and creative agencies. Held at Stage 7 at Fox Studios Australia, on 30 July, 800 people were treated to an a unique multi-sensory experience, reflective of News Corp’s focus on innovation and multi platform delivery of content. Sounds & Motion created and delivered the immersive sound experience for the event. The music was composed by renowned Australian music producer Paul Mac and the orchestral arrangements were created by George Ellis, conductor and musical director. We then custom made the sound design to compliment the musical score and integrate with the special graphics animation and video content. The result was an exciting sound experience that completely immersed the audience, drawing them into and making them part of their surrounds. In addition to the sound design, Sounds & Motion was integral to Rizer’s event production. Managing the audio components included pre-recording the orchestra, mixing all sound elements in IOSONO’s Spatial Audio Workstation, providing all audio personnel, sound system design and installation. The event speaker system consisted of 44 individual speaker channels, each individually addressed by the IOSONO Processor. Sounds and Motion recently worked with The Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO) to deliver a true innovation in sound.
The sci-fi thriller The Matrix was projected live on the big screen with Don Davis's score played by the orchestra in the Sydney Opera House's Concert Hall. Using IOSONO's spatial audio processor we created an immersive sound experience for the movie's sound effects and dialogue - which made the audience feel like they were truly in the movie with sound moving around them! This was the second time the SSO has used IOSONO, the first being their Classical and Spectacular concert in June. "In my role as consultant and engineer for the SSO’s amplified concerts within the Sydney Opera House, we’ve been working to make the sound from the live elements of these concerts feel in natural balance with the orchestra. As the leading 3D audio solution for live events IOSONO was chosen for The Matrix Live as we felt the sci-fi nature of the the film’s content would really lend itself to immersive sound" said Des O'Neill.
